More than an MES: a MOM system.
MOM (Manufacturing Operations Management) is the broad, overarching system covering all factory operations; MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is the core production component beneath it. In short: every MES is part of a MOM, but not every MOM is just an MES.
Scope
An MES focuses only on executing work on the shop floor. A MOM also manages all supporting processes — quality, maintenance and inventory.
Standard
MOM is defined by the international ISA-95 standard and aims to digitalize the entire factory.
Data depth
MES focuses on real-time machine data and part tracking; MOM manages the business-intelligence layer (OEE, performance analysis) and the ERP-integration layer.
